As we enter into what many are calling a postmodern and post-industrial era, the values we uphold as individuals and which underpin the societies we inhabit have perhaps never been so important yet discussed so little. The unique challenges of the present moment also require a rethinking of fundamental institutions and the assumptions that have held sway in the modern period. The Societal Values Project was conceived with the aim of identifying and examining these underlying values and assumptions explicitly and considering their implications, positive and negative, for individuals and society. The Societal Values website publishes essays, articles, and literature reviews giving consideration to the importance of these values in such diverse areas as politics, economics, culture and the environment.
